Texture Compression Toggle
Spatial automatically attempts to compress the textures of all 3D models including environments. This leads to up to 5-8x lower runtime memory usage by 3D models, at a slight tradeoff of quality. Spatial runs the compression in the background and it may take several minutes after uploading the model to see the compressed version (you will also need to reload the page to see changes).
In some cases the quality reduction might be more noticeable especially in models that have textures with gradients. While we generally recommend keeping texture compression on you can turn it off using the toggle by clicking the three dots in the bototm right, then clicking settings>environment. You will need to refresh the space in order see the change.
If you turn texture compression off, please test on lower end mobile devices and VR headsets if possible. Turning off the toggle would then not apply any texture compression for anyone who joins your space, so if someone is joining from a low end device then having texture compression off may cause Spatial to crash if the space is using too much memory.
Here is a comparison of a space with texture compression turned on and turned off:
Notice the difference in the smoothness of color gradients.
